Global warming is a phenomenon where the Earth’s temperature increases. This occurs because the ozone layer in the atmosphere becomes thinner. The purpose of the ozone layer is to filter the sunlight that enters the Earth, helping to keep the planet’s temperature at an appropriate level.
The process works like this: when sunlight enters the Earth, some of it is reflected back out into space. This is called the “greenhouse effect.”
The greenhouse effect is essential for life on Earth. Without it, the average temperature would be about -20°C. However, during the global warming phenomenon, the Earth becomes much hotter, causing significant damage to our planet. This includes the melting of the polar ice caps, an increase in sea temperatures, and the death of plants due to excessive heat.
The main causes of global warming are pollutants from factories and other industries, as well as household activities. These pollutants release various gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), methane (CH₄), and others. These gases accumulate in the atmosphere, trapping heat by reflecting sunlight back to the Earth’s surface, which leads to an increase in temperature. Methane emissions can also come from animal waste.
On the other hand, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) can damage the ozone layer, making it thinner and less effective in filtering sunlight.
So, what can we do to prevent global warming?
Here are some simple actions we can take to reduce the effects of global warming:
- Bring food from home in your own lunchbox instead of buying food in single-use packaging. This way, you will avoid throwing away packaging that will be burned, producing harmful gases that contribute to global warming.
- Use public transportation, walk, or bike for short trips. This reduces the amount of smoke and pollution released into the air, helping to minimize the greenhouse effect.
- Follow the principles of the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). This helps decrease the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, which, in turn, reduces the emissions of greenhouse gases.
There are many other actions you can take to help reduce global warming, but these are a good place to start. To finish, we would like to share a quote:
“Save and love our EARTH! If not us, who?“
